Many people tend to believe that to become proficient in language in few days is hard. It needs ton of effort and lot of free time to speak like a native. Some even believe that one can’t learn at all since he or she is bit older now. But always remember one thing there is no age bar for learning new things.

These are myths! We, humans are natural learners. We learned most of our life skills and mother tongue without going to a proper school. Interestingly, we even learned to speak before joining a kindergarten.

1. Be committed

You must already be having a goal to start with learning language, be it your higher education, migration, career change, or travel, in order to achieve your goals you must first commit yourself. Once you start your journey to learn language you’ll find a plethora of things to distract you and demotivate you. Only your commitment can keep you stay focused and reminded of goals.

2. Get Involved

Once you’re committed you must seize every opportunity comes to you to read, write, listen, talk and talk and talk and learn language. Yeah, you need to talk a lot and listen a lot to improve your vocabulary and skills around the language. There are no work around to develop a better fluency and understanding of any languages.

When you practice, just try be as good as you can, review yourself all time. Mostly try to imitate the native speakers, their accent, words, and may be their style. Use the new language on a daily basis, with your colleagues or at the cafe, wherever you see an opportunity to speak. They will eventually start to help you to speak more effectively and this will boost your confidence.

It would also be a great idea if can engage in frequent conversations in the language you’re learning with your room mates, family or friends so they can help you every time you practice with them. So keep practicing the right way and you will not just speak like a native, may be you will live like one.

3. Use a Notebook

It’s a good idea to carry a notebook where you may jot down new words, phrases and ideas with meanings and occasions as you finding them in your daily life. Reviewing these notes daily will help you reinforce your learning and reduce the chances of forgetting them.

If you find it difficult to use notebook, there are several alternatives you may choose from like flashcards, free or paid digital note taking apps, charts which you can hang on the wall. Good examples of digital note taking apps are OneNote and EverNote. They offer free version that you can use and share between your mobile and computer.

4. Use Internet and YouTube

This age we need to take advantage of the internet as much as possible to gain more knowledge and to practice what we learned. YouTube is a good resource for free learning using internet. The great benefit of using YouTube is you can find videos in your interested topics and you won’t be feeling bored as you learn.

One other choice is news portals like BBC, so you are not only learning the language but also staying up to date with current affairs. These daily revisions of news contents can get you new topics everyday to discuss with your friends and colleagues.

Listening to podcasts and radios are very useful, especially when you’re in commute. This way you’ll be building you listening skills and vocabulary without much efforts.

5. Get a passionate mentor

As you have read we stated in the beginning that the most important step is to be committed, then the next one is to stay committed. Initially we have a reason to motivate us and often times which is not enough to keep us committed unless we have someone to remind us about our goals.

How can one stay committed? People use many techniques to stay committed. Some people hang posters in their room, change wall papers and screensavers on the computer, set reminders and so on to keep them reminded on why you have started this journey.
